It is claimed that people embarking on a career early and striving for it tend to gain higher work satisfaction than job hoppers who change their jobs frequently. Generally, I hold the same viewpoint.

It is true that most people enter the workforce with limited ideas about whether they want to stay in a particular industry for their entire career. So it makes sense to allow themselves some chances to explore when it comes to career prospects. In addition, the digital age has changed the way an individual perceives career development. Nowadays, people are no longer confined to traditional vocational choices, such as engineers and lawyers; instead, there are more unconventional work options, for example, being an influencer on social media. Therefore, the expanding employment scenario delays the decision making of many young minds. Nevertheless, frequent changes are detrimental to adults’ career development prospects. Employers today still highly value loyalty in many industries, and they usually offer additional incentives to long-term employees, including bonuses and reward schemes. Long-time employees have the advantage of thoroughly understanding the operation at work and also becoming familiar with the staff and processes. If they work hard, their promotion prospects are good, and there is likely to be greater job security, with the promise of a good pension when they retire. In this case, young people should plan for their career early so as to explore their interests to the fullest and research for possible jobs or businesses in the specific field, then stick to the profession they enjoy, and grow together with the company. To conclude, modern society has enough examples to prove that it is never too early to plan one’s occupation, and one should commit to the career path that is carefully chosen in order to achieve the greatest job satisfaction.

Humanity’s voracious consumption of natural resources has brought about many problems. This essay will analyze some major consequences of over-depletion of oil, forests, and fresh water resources and offer possible solutions to reverse the trend.

Fossil fuels such as oil produce large quantities of carbon dioxide when burnt, and the heat trapped by carbon emissions in the atmosphere leads to climate change. The environment is naturally able to deal with certain amounts of emissions, but the consumption of oil by human activities is in dramatic rise, driving global warming to dangerous levels. Therefore, action should be taken to encourage the widespread use of renewable forms of energy, such as solar radiation, hydro power, and wind energy. A good example is the manufacture and increasing availability of electric cars, which is an effective strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

Deforestation or forest clearance results in a large number of disastrous effects, and one of them is the decline of biodiversity. From mammals to birds, insects, amphibians or plants, the forest is home to many rare and fragile species. By destroying the forests, human activities are putting entire ecosystems in danger, creating natural imbalance, and putting Life at threat. In order to maintain biodiversity, governments should promote greater understanding of plants and animals by investing in the research and preservation effort of universities, zoos, and botanical institutes. An alternative strategy is to protect natural habitats by expanding nature reserves, which will have immediate positive consequences for those areas by preserving delicate ecosystems.

Insufficient fresh water resources have become a main crisis in many countries, both wealthy and poor. However, the profligate use of water exacerbates the situation. The biggest problem originating from water shortage is that people can hardly survive since up to 60% of the human body consists of water, and sanitation issues are followed when there is no proper access to clean water for daily use. Other adverse consequences of water scarcity include food shortage as agriculture relies on irrigation and economic slowdown because sufficient water access is a priority for industrial development. To address this issue, the government should provide leadership and work collectively across departments of legislation, regulation, and taxation levers to conduct water reuse, management, and conservation and to promote water treatment technologies such as desalination.

To conclude, natural sources of energy are scarce worldwide nowadays; thus, effective measures should be taken immediately to make a difference.

Introduction

A conundrum of modern societies is the declining level of health in the general population, such as corpulence, which can be partly ascribed to people’s preference for unhealthy foods despite the fact that they know the detriments. Personally, behind such preference are two predominant factors, and this thorny issue can hopefully be tackled.

Shops should not be allowed to sell any food or drink that has been scientifically proved to be bad for people’s health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Ø conundrum n. 难题

Ø corpulence n.

Ø be ascribed to 被归因于

Ø detriment n. 坏处

Reasons

To commence, the sound flavour that junk food offers should be responsible for the unhealthy diet. This is mainly because those unhealthy foods are usually sugar-, salt-, or fat-laden ones high in calorie and GI, which, after being eaten, will stimulate nerve cells to produces dopamine, a chemical functioning as a neurotransmitter to convey bliss and excitement. For this reason, people prefer or even easily get addicted to sugary beverages and fatty foods, especially the ones whose mouthfeel has been enhanced./ Besides, it is due to the surging living pressure that most employees nowadays have to work non-stop. In this case, they tend to order these instant foods, usually unhealthy ones, which fit the current fast-paced life.

Ø laden adj.

Ø dopamine n.

Ø function as v. 起…作用

Ø neurotransmitter n.

Ø mouthfeel n. 口感

Solutions

Considering the gravity of this trend, two schemes can be put on the agenda. The first approach is that policies regarding subsidisation can be issued by governments to motivate manufacturers to develop diet and delicious products. Meanwhile, the subsidies can also to some extent reduce the production costs, which will guarantee the newly-developed products sold with a proper price. Besides, high tax could be imposed on unhealthy food products. In this way, producers will thus have to raise the price for the sake of ensuring their profits, which naturally follows that ordinary people are more likely to consume the aforementioned cheaper but healthy alternatives.

Ø diet adj.

Ø impose vt. 征收

Conclusion

To recapitulate, since possible culprits and feasible remedies have been enumerated, this crisis can be promisingly resolved with joint efforts of relevant parties.

Ø recapitulate v. 总结

Ø culprit n.

Ø remedy n.

Ø promisingly adv.

Task:Some working parents believe childcare centers can provide best care for their children, while others think of other family members like grandparents can do this job. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample answer:

Traditionally, toddlers are raised by their relatives such as grandparents in most countries. However, daycare centers have gained a growing popularity among working parents in recent years. From my point of view, attending a childcare center has more benefits.

One obvious argument in favor of daycare centers is that it provides children with the professional childhood education. This is because a good daycare centre is normally equipped with well-trained staff who can impart different skills, such as singing, dancing, painting and storytelling, to children through a variety of activities during the day. In addition to the well-organised, structured projects, toddlers are provided with more opportunities to socialize with other peers, which helps them gain confidence and self-consicousness. However, these opportunities are rare to achieve if they are watched over by grandparents.

Opponents feel that a relative care is as effective as children center. The reason for this is that taking care of a child is never an easy task, as children need constant love and attention. In fact, due to the limited number of caregivers, children are less likely to get the one-on-one care. By contrast, relatives, grandparents in particular, have sufficient time to take care of their beloved grandchildren, which also contributes to the family bond.

I personally believe that no child can become an active and valuable member of any society without intercommunicating with other peers. Therefore, although there are conniving arguments for a relative care, it is better to send them into daycare centers in the childhood period.

It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about the other culture. We can learn as much as from books, films and internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, people have been interested in making a long journey to some unfamiliar cities which are far from their hometown. One of their tourism purposes is mainly to experience the local culture and learn the traditions. However, someone doubts that people can obtain culture-related information through books, films and internet instead of travel. I disagree on this view to a certain degree, although books, films and internet are useful resources for providing valuable cultural information.

It is a time-saving way to search comprehensive cultural information concerning tourism destinations by using books and the internet. Many published travel guide books have summarized helpful strategies and explored cultural landscape in detail for tourists like Lonely Planet and National Geographic. People nowadays also tend to record their journey on some online travel websites such as Trip Advisor, which offer a convenient platform for worldwide travelers to share their own cultural experiences. Also, general public may not get an insight into local customs and traditions when they are traveling, due to some objective limiting factors like holiday length, tourism budget and language barrier.

As primary travelling information sources, books, films and internet all have their obvious drawbacks. Travel records on travel notes may have been out of date when tourists are reading them as everything is changing in a country in the age of globalization, including cultural sector. For example, Spanish women have no longer used a fan as a kind of body language. Besides, information from films and internet seems to show a lack of reliability. Film is a kind of art which is exaggerated and dramatic in the respect of content description. On the internet, every net user can express their opinions to a same cultural phenomenon or traditional event so that the word-of mouth is not authoritative and objective to a high degree.

To summarise, relying on books, films and the internet to obtain cultural information is not enough because lacks trust and authority, even though these resources are sufficient and accessible. The combination of travel and knowledge (from books, films and internet) would be the best choice.

Some people believe that job satisfaction is more important than job security. Others believe that people cannot always enjoy their jobs and that a permanent job is more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that seeking for a decent job is not as easy as decades ago due to the economic recession and competitive job market. Although some may argue that a sense of satisfaction towards their jobs is crucial, personally, I believe that a permanent job is more meaningful.

On the one hand, a permanent job can guarantee to meet employee’s basic needs. This is because almost no one can escape from the reality. Everyday, we are facing with a variety of expenses, such as food, shelter, transport, bill and even education tuition for children. With a relatively stable job, people, especially those in middle aged can cover most expenses. In addition, those who stay in the same company or institute are more likely to get a promotion as they show the loyalty towards their company. However, those who change their jobs frequently may meet unintended outcomes. For example, they may find difficult to support themselves and raise their family members.

On the other hand, those advocates for pursuing a job they love might regard job satisfaction as the priority when finding an employment. They believe only working with friendly colleagues and employers and under a flexible working time schedule, can they fulfill their potential and accomplish all tasks well. However, this idea is unrealistic. For example, dozens of young graduateshave the bitter result because of their immature thought, that is unemployment.

In my opinion, there is no perfect job in the world. The only thing we can do is to find a suitable job rather than a perfect one. There is a 10,000 hours theory in psychology thatpeople who devotethemselves to jobs and spend more than 10,000 hours constantly can become experts in that field. This theory tells us a plain fact that no one can achieve a sense of job satisfaction without years of efforts and persistence.

In conclusion, people having a constant job are more likely to have a promising job career and wellbeing.

It is common for enterprises to have seniors as top executives nowadays. However, there is an argument that young people should also be offered the opportunities to be the leaders as the age should not be the glass ceiling that bars them from upper management in large corporations. From my perspective, I agree with this idea.

First of all, young leaders, especially those employed in high-technology companies, are easy to keep pace with the rapidly changing market. Admittedly, compared with senior employees, they do lack experience of the past, but facing this rapid shifting market, their inadequate experience can be in turn seen as an advantage, as being in the same age of the targeting customers, they can understand the current popular tendency and are less likely to be inhibited by self - consciousness. Therefore, they are able to absorb the latest information and use their lateral thinking to make adaptations to meet the demand,. Besides, young people have more abundant time and vigorous to be a leader. Being managers means catering to enormous tasks simultaneously, and as most young people have not been married and formed their families, they can devote themselves to their work and maximise their output, which is impossible for older people.

Undeniably, when facing an emergency or a dilemma, compared with the aged leaders, the young generation tend to be less responsible and considerable, resulting in impulsive decisions due to their immaturity. Consequently, organisations might be at risk. However, young candidates who have the potential to be the manager can be first recruited as the management trainee, and after having the professional training ranging from six months to five years, they are sure to have the capability to deal with diverse situations.

In conclusion, despite the defects of young managers, young people are eligible for leadership. Therefore, organisations should be encouraged to employ the young generation in top positions.

Admittedly, government should, at least partially, be in charge of sending youngsters to school. This is mainly because young children are vulnerable members of society, and they may be confronted with unexpected accidents. In this case, it is imperative for government to assume its unescapable obligation by transporting young students to school. Besides, if government has a sufficient budget, it should provide such welfare services to its taxpayers, as those parents are very likely to be wrapped up in their work, with no more time allocated to giving their children a ride to school. // However, offering totally free transport may seriously strain public finances, forcing the government to make serious cuts to its expenditure in other crucial domains such as healthcare, public infrastructure, poverty elimination, and environment protection.

  vulnerable adj.

  be confronted with 遭遇到

  assume vt. 承担

  taxpayer n.

  strain vt.

  make cuts to sth.

  elimination n.

 Body 2

Acting as the legal guardians of young children, parents undoubtedly ought to take the responsibility to ensure the safety of their kids. In addition, if there is a short distance between the home and the school, it is even more inconvenient for students to take the school bus, as their residences are not always on a school bus route. Driving children to school by parents can instead save much time. // However, it is not always the case, since there are either instances where parents fail to coordinate the time of transporting their children and going to work on time due to the long travelling distance, or instances where impoverished families cannot afford private cars to drive their children to school.

  guardian n. 监护人

  residence n.[C] 住宅

  on a …. route 在…

  impoverished adj.

 04

In conclusion, government and parents should be jointly responsible for transferring children to school. If there is a short distance, then it is advised for parents to take such responsibility. If the travelling distance is rather long, then parents ought to send their children to the nearest school bus station punctually, and it is legitimate for government to charge parents a reasonable fee. Meanwhile, low-income families should be taken into consideration, and government has to guarantee children from these families free access to school buses.

  jointly adv.

  punctually adv. 准时地

  legitimate adj.

the spiritual backbone of a nation

build a sense of responsibility

develop a strong sense of cultural identity

On the other hand, the knowledge of international history is also vital for students. In this globalised age, people have witnessed an ever-increasing exchange of cultures between countries. The best way to be aware of the cultures of different countries is to learn about their history. By studying international history, students can get to know people in various countries, what they believe in, how they lead their daily life, and their traditions and customs. What’s more, students can absorb novel things from international history. Therefore, students will become inclusive because they have learned cultural differences and accepted the diversity of the world. International history broadens their mind.

The graph shows the producton of main fuels in UK between 1986 and 2000.

The line graph illustrates how the amount of three primary fuels generated had changed in the UK during 14 years spanning from 1986 to 2000.

From 1986 to 1995, we can see that petroleum was a dominant resource, with its production standing at 120 in 1986. Then there was a significant rise in the following years and after peaking at 140 in 1991, the production dropped considerably down to the 1986 figure. A reversed trend could be seen in coal, with its generation starting from 110 and ending with roughly 90 in 1995. It is natural gas that remained the least and the most stable at around 60 over the time frame.

During the remaining five year, a particular rise could be seen in petroleum, shooting up to almost 150 in 2000 while coal underwent a dramatic fall to about 60. Natural gas had gained more popularity, exceeding coal in 1996 and finally becoming the second leading resource in this country with 120 of total production.

In brief, petrol and natural gas were the leading energy while coal had lost its dominance over this period.

It\'s more important for school children to learn about their local history than world history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people argue that it is more significant for school children to study local history rather than international history. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with this view. I think they hold equal value, and thus we should attach equal importance to them.

Nowadays many students have the opportunity to study for part or all of their courses in foreign countries. While studying abroad brings many benefits to individual students, it also has a number of disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree?

In recent years there has been a vast increase in the number of students choosing to study abroad. This is partly because people are more affluent and party due to the variety of grants and scholarships which are available for overseas students nowadays. Although foreign study is not something which every student would choose, it is an attractive option for many people.

Studying overseas has a number of advantages. Firstly, it may give students access to knowledge and facilities such as laboratories and libraries which are not available in their home country. Furthermore, by looking abroad students may find a wider range of courses than those offered in their country’s universities, and therefore one which fits more closely to their particular requirements.

On the other hand, studying abroad has a number of drawbacks. These may be divided into personal and professional. Firstly, students have to leave their family and friends for a long period. Furthermore, studying abroad is almost always more expensive than studying at one’s local university. Finally, students often have to study in a foreign language, which may limit their performance and mean they do not attain their true level.

In my opinion, however, the disadvantages of studying abroad are usually temporary in nature. Students who study abroad generally become proficient in the language quite soon and they are only away from their family and friends for a year or two. Furthermore, many of the benefits last students all their lives and make them highly desirable to prospective employers.

The chart below shows the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK, divided into three categories, from 1995-2002.

Here\'s my suggested outline for a 4-paragraph report: Introduction: rewrite the question statement in your own words.

Overview: point out which category was highest in each year, which was lowest, and which saw the biggest changes.

Details: compare the 3 categories in 1995, then say what happened up until 1999.

Details: notice what happened to local calls from 1999 onwards, and contrast this with the other 2 categories. Finish with a comparison of the figures in 2002.
