西双版纳素有植物王国和动物王国的美称，这里有七种珍稀鱼类，其中最著名的有大鳍鱼、双孔鱼等。区内的两栖类、爬行类、鸟类、兽类动物中，懒猴、白颊长臂猿、云豹、金钱豹、虎、野象、野牛、鬣羚、赤颈鹤、白喉犀鸟、棕颈犀鸟、冠斑犀鸟、熊猴、猕猴、豚尾猴、菲氏叶猴、马来熊、小熊猫、水獭、金猫、鼷鹿、水鹿、原鸡、白鹇、绿孔雀、孔雀雉、巨蜥、蟒等，均为国家保护动物。但是由于大量森林被砍伐导致野生动物栖息繁衍地的人为破坏，致使野生动物种类数量急剧减少及分布范围日益缩小，许多野生动物种类已处于濒临灭绝的境地。

3种麂中以黑麂数量最少，分布区狭窄，已列为国际濒危动物。
