Some parents offer their school-age children money for each high grade (mark) they get in school. Do you think this is a good idea?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Offer;school-age children;for each high grade(mark)they get in school

School-age children need encouragement from parents to build confidence and willingness in study. The act that parents offer money for each grade they get is a good material incentive, which allows them to have enough pocket money to do what they want to as well as the sufficient reasons to work hard to get a next good grade.

Some school-age children that are occupied with studies feel isolated. They do not have enough awareness about what behind the good grades in examinations. Parents’ behavior of offering money for each high grade they get tells them that working hard in study is a necessary. It means parents cares about their efforts and their results. They stand with their children.

Material rewards should not be the best way to encourage school-age children to have a better academic performance. Parents have the obligation to let their school-age children know that only by studying hard, can they achieve good grades in examinations. And making efforts in study is all for their own choices of their future.

School-age children do not have a mature and sound consumption view. Once they got much money from their parents, they are likely to spend their pocket money without any limit before they have a consideration. They may form a bad habit of spending money.

Parents’ behavior of offering money for their children’s each high grade in school will make their school-age children misunderstand that grade or mark,is the most valuable standard to measure their academic performance. And money is the optimum way to express recognition. They have an alternative to tell their children that the process of acquiring weighs more and they always understand them during the way of learning. For example, the frequent communication and participation in their children’s learning activities.

In the reading passage, the author raises that reading less literature has caused unfortunate effects on the reading public, the cultural general and literature itself. On the contrary, the professor strongly contradicts with it.

To begin with, according to the reading passage, the author mainly talks about reading less literature cannot provide readers with intellectual stimulation. By contrast, the lecturer disagrees with it and she reasons that a book doesn’t have to be literature to be intellectually stimulating. Science books, history and political analysis aren’t literature but they are often of high quality and some of those books are just as creative and well-written as novels and poems. So don’t assume that someone who isn’t reading literature isn’t reading a good book.

To be followed, the reading passage indicates that the culture is in decline. However, the speaker holds the opposite opinion and she says that people are not just spending less time in literature and they are spending less time with books in general. However, today, there are many culturally valuable material that isn’t written such as a brilliant song and good movie. People are not wasting their time when they listen to good songs and watch good movies. Those non-literal activities will not lower the culture. Even some of those creative forms can speak more directly to contemporary concerns than literature does.

Lastly, the writer in the reading part says that it is the readers’ fault to lead to the less support for literature. By comparison, the listening material presents a totally different opinion that it is the authors’ fault because today’s literature is intended to be difficult to understand. So don’t assume the earlier’s generations of readers would read a lot modern literature today.

In 1990, new rules and guidelines were adopted in the United Kingdom that has changed the whole field of Archaeology in that country. The new guidelines improved the situation in all there areas discussed in the passage.

First, the new guidelines state that before any construction project can start, the construction site has to be examined by archaeologists to see whether the site is of archaeological interest or value. If the site is of archaeological interest, the next step is for the builders, archaeologists and local government officials to get together and make a plan for preserving the archaeological artifacts, either by building around them or by excavating and documenting them properly before the construction is allowed to proceed.

Second, an important part of the new guidelines is a rule that any archaeological work done on the construction site will be paid for by the construction company not by the government. The construction company has to pay for the initial examination of the site, and then for all the work carried out under the preservation plan. This is a whole new source of financial support. The funding from construction companies has allowed researchers to study a far greater range of archaeological sites than they could in the past.

Last, the new guidelines provide a lot of paid work for archaeologists, work that didn’t exist before. Expert archaeologists are now hired at all stages of the process to examine the site for archaeological value, then to help draw up the preservation plan to do the research in a professional scientific manner and finally to process the date and write reports and articles. The increased job and career opportunities in Archaeology have increased the number of professional archaeologists in Britain, which is now the highest it’s ever been.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Most experiences in our lives that seemed difficult at the time become valuable lessons for the future. Use reasons and specific examples to support our answer.

Some people argue that most experiences in our lives that seemed difficult at the time can later become valuable experiences. I cannot agree with them more. There are numerous reasons why I hold confidence on this opinion, and I would explore only a few primary ones here.

Difficulties are beneficial to our personal growth. In the course of our life, we will face numerous difficulties, and each difficulty will help us grow up, and become a valuable lesson for the future. A toddler fells off the ground for many times before he knows how to walk, and a child learns how to swim after he drinks water in the swimming pool. In addition, only after we experienced failures, we know the value of success. We will never appreciate anything that comes so easy. Difficulties can make us feel stronger and be more confident for the future obstacles.

Furthermore, difficulties in our work can help us gain more experience and knowledge. Most of the times we can gain knowledge and experiences faster through experiencing difficulties in our life and trying to find a solutions to the perplexities that we face. There is a famous saying, ^v^no pain no gain.^v^ For example, when we take on a new job that we do not have much experience in, the first few weeks can be extremely painful and we may feel enormous pressure and difficulties. And we will try our best to adjust, to learn and to think, how to do this job better. The more difficulties we feel, the harder we try to acquire the skills and knowledge to overcome it. Learning and this stage is extremely efficient and our problem solving skills well increase. After we overcome more and more problems, we can become an experienced worker in this field and will be able to take on more challenges. We will never fear that we will face the same kind of problem again. This means that we have accumulated valuable experiences for the future.

In a word, a difficult experience is a gift that life gives us. We should appreciate it and take it as a precious opportunity to gain knowledge and experience about our study, work and life.

Paragraph 1

A contrast of opinions concerning the likelihood of an excavated artifact’s possible function as ancient batteries is evident in both the reading passage and the lecture. The main contrasts are as follows.

Paragraph 2

Firstly, the reading challenges the proposition that the vessel is a battery by pointing out the fact that there’s no electrical conductor, such as a metal wire. The professor responds by suggesting that since the vessel was dug up by untrained villagers, the metal wire, which may have been around that excavation site, may have been deemed unimportant.

Paragraph 3

Secondly, the suggestion in the reading that a similar-looking jar found in a nearby city of Seleucia may indicate the more probable use of the vessel -- holding scrolls of text -- is contradicted by the lecturer’s suggestion that the original purpose of the text-holding jar may have been adapted by a certain ancient inventor for producing electricity. In other words, the function of the vessel may have evolved from a simple container to an ancient battery.

Paragraph 4

The final disagreement is with the actual purpose of a battery in the ancient world. The reading suggests since there were no electric device that needed power in ancient society, so the possibility that the vessel was used as a battery is very low. But the professor proposes that the vessel’s power-generating capacity may have been used for magical or medical purposes.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Telephones and email have madecommunication between people less personal. Use specific reasons and examples to support youropinion.

At first glance, this statement may sound plausible because except from personal contact, everyother forms of communication, including telephones and emails, are indirect ways ofcommunication. But shall we get a conclusion that telephones and email have madecommunication between people less personal? To answer this question, we should look at thefollowing points:

First, telephone and email are more efficient ways of communication. Telephones and email arebecoming more and more important for us today. We use telephones for conversations to ourfriends and family; we use email to transfer important information and documents, even photo andmulti-media files. With a phone, we can order services and make enquires regarding a servicewithout physically present in the place, this will save us so much time and energy. In time ofemergencies, when it is impossible for us to physically go to a police station or a hospital, we cansimply call 911, a emergency vehicle will come to us in ten minutes. Imagine how hard it will befor us if we do not have access to a telephone under emergency situations.

Second, telephones and email increase the chances that people communicate. Although face-to-face personal contact is more close and intimate than making phone calls or sending emails, weactually do not have much time to visit each other. Furthermore, people have their own privatelife. Sometimes they do not want to be disturbed by visitors. A phone call or an email message isalways the most proper and courteous way to make contact with people, and are not restrained bytime or occasions. For example, during the Chinese New Years, more and more people makephone calls to our friends and folks, or send electronic cards through email, wishing them a happynew year, instead of actually travel to their friends’ house to make a visit.

In conclusion, telephones and email are convenient ways to communicate and can actually increase the communication between people. They maybe less personal, but they are surely moreeffective means of communication.
