The information given by the bar charts is about the major causes of study among students in different age group and the amount of support they acquired from employers.

The first graph shows that there is a gradual decrease in study for career reasons with age. Nearly 80% of students under 26 years, study for their career. This percentage declines by 10% -20% every decade. Only 40% of 40-49 year olds and 18% of over 49 year olds are studying for career reasons. Conversely, there are only 10% of under 26 yr olds studying out of interest. The figure increases till the beginning of the fourth decade, and increases in late adulthood. However, 70% of over 49yr olds study for interest, about 4 times as many as that for career.

The second graph shows that employer support is maximum (about 60%) for the under 26yr students. It drops rapidly to 32% up to the third decade of life, and then increases in late adulthood up to about 44%. It is unclear whether employer support is only for career-focused study, but the highest level is for those students who mainly study for career purposes.

All in all, it is clear to see that there is an obvious difference in the distribution of reasons for study according to age group and most employers would like to give younger staff members time off and fees to continue academic study.

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to inform you that I wish to movesintosa new room next term. I would prefer a single room, as I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.

I must explain that the reason for my dissatisfaction is my room-mate’s inconsiderate behavior. For one thing, his friends are constantly visiting him; for another, he regularly holds noisy parties. In addition, he sometimes borrows my things without asking me. In these circumstances. I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies, and I am falling behind in my assignments.

I am sure you will agree that the only solution is for me to molesintosa room of my own, swheresI will be free from such distractions. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could find a single room for me, preferably not in the same building but as near to the college campus as possible.

Yours sincerely.

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction?

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Nowadays many adults have full-time jobs and the proportion of their lives spent doing such jobs is very high. So feelings about one’s job must reflect how an individual feels about his or her life as a whole, and because of this, job satisfaction is indeed very important for the wellbeing of that person.

Employees get job satisfaction in a number of ways. Firstly, a person needs to feel that they are doing valued and valuable work, so positive feedback from superiors is very important in this respect. A sense of fulfillment is also encouraged if a worker feels the job is worth doing because it contributes to the society or the economy as a whole. Secondly, when someone feels they are improving or developing their skills through training opportunities, for example, then there is a sense of progression and purpose that rewards a worker. The sense of belonging to a team or a working community also contributes to job satisfaction because colleagues help each other to enjoy their working lives. Satisfaction is also increased by a sense of responsibility for and loyalty to a team.

Of course not everyone enjoys their work. Hard economic realities mean that many people have little choice in the kind of job they can get. In some cases an employee is working in a job that suits neither their skills nor their personality. Some jobs are repetitive and boring, and labour relations may be poor and lead to resentment and insecurity rather than to job satisfaction.

However, even though it is unlikely that all workers do feel happy in their work, I think it is not unrealistic to promote more job satisfaction in any job. If the factors identified above are implemented, then any job can be improved and more workers can feel greater degrees of job satisfaction.

If…, then…(条件状语)

because(原因状语)

… if … because ….(条件状语 + 原因状语)

When…,then…(时间状语)

Even though…,…(让步状语)

I think it is not unrealistic to…(我觉得这件事并非不真实……

…, and…(并列句)

neither…nor…(否定并列句)

1、分析题目;

2、考虑答案;

3、计划和组织答案;

4、写答案;

Writing Task 2

1、题目和问题 - 要认清题目的要求和找出题目中想问的问题;

2、介绍 - 这是用来表达文章的大意,如果要写的是一篇评论文,笔者的方向也要在这里表达出来;

3、主体 - 如主体分为三段的话,通常前两段是您的观点和动手您的理由,后一段是用来平衡讨论的相反观点;

Dolphin is my favourite animal. It is one of the most precious animals. Their bodies are very long, about one zhang. Dolphins live in the sea. They live on fish, shrimps and so on. Dolphins are very friendly and peaceful. They never attack people. Instead, they have saved many people in danger in the past years. How helpful the dolphins are! Dolphins are very clever. People often train them so that they can give a dolphin show which brings people a lot of happiness and joy. Unluckily, the number of dolphins is getting smaller and smaller. Because of water pollution, there is less and less space for dolphins. Many people make money by hunting dolphins. If we don’t protect them, maybe we’ll lose our good friends one day. As a student, I hope more and more people should take actions to protect dolphins.

Every year, millions of animals undergo painful suffering or death as a result of scientific research into the effects of drugs, food additives, cosmetics and other chemical products. While most people think animal testing is necessary, others are upset by what they see as needless suffering. This essay looks at some of the positive and negative aspects of animal testing.

Many medical treatments and procedures have been developed from experiments on animals. Since animals share many features with humans, scientists use animals to test the safety and effectiveness of newly developed drugs before pilot testing on small groups of patients. Medical teams practice new operating techniques such as transplants on animals. Without animal testing, many procedures or new drugs would be extremely unsafe.

However, many people are concerned that animals are suffering unnecessarily and cruelly. They do not believe that every new drug needs to be tested on animals, especially with the huge database of knowledge and modern computer models. They also are worried that many animal tests are ineffective, pointing out that any drugs have had to be withdrawn from the market despite extensive testing. They particularly feel that animal testing should not be used for non-essential products such as cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, and cleaning products. Furthermore, some campaigners would like to see certain tests replaced and more humane methods used.

Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, so protecting them is a waste of resources. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

范文:

Some people argue that it is pointless to spend money on the protection of wild animals because we humans have no need for them. I completely disagree with this point of view.

In my opinion, it is absurd to argue that wild animals have no place in the 21st century. I do not believe that planet Earth exists only for the benefit of humans, and there is nothing special about this particular century that means that we suddenly have the right to allow or encourage the extinction of any species. Furthermore, there is no compelling reason why we should let animals die out. We do not need to exploit or destroy every last square metre of land in order to feed or accommodate the world’s population. There is plenty of room for us to exist side by side with wild animals, and this should be our aim.

I also disagree with the idea that protecting animals is a waste of resources. It is usually the protection of natural habitats that ensures the survival of wild animals, and most scientists agree that these habitats are also crucial for human survival. For example, rainforests produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and stabilise the Earth’s climate. If we destroyed these areas, the costs of managing the resulting changes to our planet would far outweigh the costs of conservation. By protecting wild animals and their habitats, we maintain the natural balance of all life on Earth.

In conclusion, we have no right to decide whether or not wild animals should exist, and I believe that we should do everything we can to protect them.

Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should be taken into account when deciding the punishment。

Discuss both views and give your own opinion。

On the one hand, fixed punishment will have a deterring effect on society. ‖Individuals knowing that they will be subject to a certain punishment if they are convicted with a given crime will reconsider committing this act in the first place. ‖This deterring effect also leads to social stability and security, through minimizing the number of crimes committed. ‖If people knew they would be able to convince the court or the jury of reason for having committed the crime they are accused of, penal decisions would be largely arbitrary. This would result into criminals getting away with their crimes and into a high level of injustice caused by the subjective approach of different courts。

(fixed punishment will have a deterring effect on society。)

2. 理由:考虑犯罪成本(reconsider committing crimes in the first place)

3. 扩展结果:有利于社会稳定(lead to social stability and security through minimizing the number of crimes committed。)

(If people knew they would be able to convince the court or the jury of reason for having committed the crime they are accused of , penal decisions would be largely arbitrary。)

(criminals getting away with their crimes and a high level of injustice caused by the subjective approach of different courts。)

Coherence and cohesion

Coherence and cohesion

1. Logically organizes information and ideas; there is a clear progression throughout

2. Uses a range of cohesive devices appropriately although there may be some under/over-use

3. Presents a clear central topic within each paragraph

Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should be taken into account when deciding the punishment。

Discuss both views and give your own opinion。

In my opinion an intermediary position between both solutions is the perfect way to establish and ensure justice and equity. There have to be fixed punishment for all crimes. However, criminal laws have to provide for a minimum and maximum for the punishment and the laws also have to foresee certain cases of exemptions. An example for setting minimum and maximum penalties is Competition Law where a person being held liable of a crime under this law will be convicted to pay a fine, according to the harm caused by the violation and the profit gained by the violator through committing the crime. As for the exemptions, in some countries the law exempts thieves stealing food during a period of famine taking into consideration the distress and hunger. Also, a person killing in self-defense will be exempted from punishment。

(an intermediary position between both solutions is the perfect way to establish and ensure justice and equity。)

Task:Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists, not local people. Why is this the case and what can be done to attract local people.

Sample answer:

Museums and historical sites are the sanctuary where we can acquire historical knowledge and cultural heritage. However, it has become less attractive to the local recently. As well as discussing the factors contributing to this trend. This essay will try to find its solutions.

It is apparent that many local people assume that they are consciously aware of their cities. And they feel less fresh if they have appreciated such places ever before. In addition, many museum and sites are chargeable. As a result. The local prefer to enjoy their leisure time at home rather than in museum or historical sites.

The inescapable fact is that Museums and historical sites are always the first option to many tourists. For one thing, they can pay the least spending as well as enjoy the most local knowledge and scenery. For another thing, the revenue of museums and historical sites account for the most local tourism. Governments are more pleased to attract tourists to these two places rather than to the locals. If this situation still continues in the future, there will be less local visiting to the museums and historical sites.

One main solution is to enrich their diversity of activities. Museums can hold some larruping activities, such as Healthy Lecture and Civil Sporting Meeting. These activities will not only arouse the enthusiasm of citizens, but also add some color to this city. Besides, at some degree, lowing the price to draw more visits is also a feasible solution.

To summarise, tourists will continuously choose museum and historical sites as their must-visits. However, it is still necessary to take some actions to maintain the local’s visiting.

1. Do you like reading?

No, I don’t like it. I don’t have the patience. I have never been able to read a book from start to finish. Maybe the books I have tried were not interesting enough.

2. Do you like reading?

Yes, I like it very much. I believe that all of us should read a lot. When you read, you acquire new knowledge, which in turn will broaden your views on important issues. I prefer magazines like ‘Crazy English’. The topics in it are interesting and the essays are short. Besides, it contains translations which ensure that I don’t have to waste time looking up unfamiliar words.

3. What kinds of books do you like best?

I like cartoons. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I believe cartoons are a special form of art. For example, the Japanese cartoons that are common in China, have excellent illustrations.

4. What kinds of books do you like best?

I like novels. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I like to read a storyline that is full of intrigue and suspense. For example, many love stories have characters who are involved in all sorts of conflicts amongst them. The most common one known all over the world since ancient times is the so-called ‘love triangle’.

5. Describe a book that you have read recently.

I have read a book about the life of Michael Jordan. I am sorry, but I have forgotten the name of the book. I also like to read Japanese cartoons.

6. Describe a book that you have read recently.

I have recently read a book about the history of South Africa. It is called ‘ The Covenant’, and was written by a famous American author called James Mitchener. It describes the history from the very first days, up to the present. It covers all aspects of the country, but focuses on the people of the country. For example, he looks at the political situation over the past fifty years, which was based on racial discrimination and had become known to the world as ‘apartheid’.

7. Do you often read newspapers?

No, I never read newspaper. I watch TV if I want to know what is happening in China and the world. It takes too much time to read newspapers. For example, the news on TV is short and to the point, and that’s all I want to know.

8. Do you often read the newspapers?

No. I have used the Internet these days to know what’s happening in China and the world. Websites like CNN contain all the latest news on world events. Besides, I like to read about stories in depth, and this I cannot find in newspapers. One more thing that newspaper are lack of is the history behind a story. By the Internet I can do some research right away, and thus gain a broader perspective on the subject at hand.

1. Where do you come from?

2. How long have you lived in your hometown?

I come from Shenyang. My parents have been living here for the past thirty years or so. I grew up here and I attended a well-known school called School number 163. We live in a nice area with many shops, restaurants, and other businesses.

3. Where do you come from?

4. How long have you lived in your hometown?

I come from Shenyang. My parents have been living here for the past thirty years or so. I grew up here and I attended a well-known school called School number 163. We live in a respectable area with many shops, restaurants, and a variety of other businesses. The people in our building are generally friendly and quite, which makes it a pleasure to live there.

5. Where do you live?

I live with my parents here in Shenyang at the moment. To be more exact,we live in an apartment building in one of the northern suburbs of the city. I have my own room and enjoy the privacy that it brings, but I am looking forward to the day that I can have my own apartment. Allow me to explain:they are good parents, and I love them very much, but I would like to be more independent soon.

6. Where do you live?

Well, that is not so easy to answer. Please allow me to explain. During the week I live in a dormitory at the university, but over weekends I live with my parents in a village about one hour by car from Shenyang. So I really do not know which of the two to call my home at the moment.

7. Can you tell me something about your hometown?

Yes,certainly. Shenyang is in the northeast part of China, and the capital of the Liaoning province. It has about seven million inhabitants. It has many heavy industries such as automobile, aircraft, and machine tool manufacturers. In addition,it is rich in history. For example, the Japanese invaded the city and committed many atrocities(that is to say many crimes)during the occupation. This is still remembered by many of the elderly folks to this day. Another example that I could mention is the Imperial Palace that belonged to the last dynasty - the Qing dynasty- in China.

Professional workers like doctors, nurses and teachers make a greater contribution to society and so should be paid more than sports and entertainment personalities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Write about the following topic:

In today\'s competitive world, many families find it necessary for both parents to go out to work. While some say the children in these families benefit from the additional income, others feel they lack support because of their parents\' absence.

Model Answer:

In the past a typical family consisted of a father who went out to work and a mother who stayed at home and looked after the children. Nowadays, it is the norm for both parents to work. This situation can affect children both positively and negatively.

Some people think that the children of working parents are in an advantageous position where their parents are able to afford mere luxuries such as new clothes, video games or mobile phones. Proponents of this view argue that children are able to enjoy and experience more from life due to their parents\' extra wealth, for example, by going on foreign holidays.

On the other hand, however, there are those who claim that when both parents work, their children do not get enough support and attention, meaning that the children might not do as well at school because there is no one at house to provide support with such things as homework or exam revision. The absence of a parent at home could make it easier for children to get involved in such things as drugs or undertake drinking.

When I was growing up, both my parents worked and I was always well provided for. On the other hand, I think that it would sometimes have been better if I could have seen more of my parents.

In conclusion, I believe that we cannot change the fact that both parents have to work nowadays. It is not an ideal situation, but if parents make time for their children in the evenings and at the weekends, then the children will not suffer in any way. It must be stated that the extra income generated by both parents working, makes for a much higher standard of living which benefits the whole family.

Some people believe that hobbies need to be difficult tobe what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some hobbies are relatively easy, while others present more of a , I believe that both types of hobby can be fun, and I therefore disagree with the statement that hobbies need to be difficult in order to be enjoyable.

On the one hand, many people enjoy easy hobbies. One example of an activity that is easy for most people is hobby requires very little equipment, it is simple to learn, and it is remember learning to swim at my local swimming pool when I was a child, and it never felt like a demanding or challenging hobby that I find easy and fun is photography. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting pictures without knowing too much about the technicalities of operating a camera. Despite being straightforward , taking photos is a satisfying activity.

On the other hand, difficult hobbies can sometimes be more exciting. If an activity is more challenging, we might feel a greater sense of satisfaction when we manage to do it successfully. For example, film editing isa hobby that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise. In my case, it took me around two years before l became competent at this activity, but now I enjoy it much more than I did when l believe that many hobbies give us more pleasure when we reach a higher level of performance because the results are better and the feeling of achievement is greater.

ln conclusion, simple hobbies can be fun and relaxing, but difficult hobbies can be equally pleasurable for different reasons.

Move businesses to more accessible areas for those who live further out

Encourage more public transport use

Offer work from home options

However, it is not realistic to suggest that people do so. Many cities do not have the infrastructure in place to accommodate a mass inflow of people to the cities. Rather than have people move, I believe more businesses should move to more accessible areas, where people do not have to travel so far by car, or can use public transport. Secondly, companies should offer a work from home option to all staff, regardless of where they live. Not only does this reduce pollution, traffic and transportation problems, but it also reduces the stress on people to travel. One study found that working from home lowered stress levels for 82% of the employees surveyed.

rather than 而不是

work from home 在家工作

regardless of 不管

There are some people who will always prefer to drive, regardless of where they live and work. However, by offering more options to staff, and making workplaces more accessible, traffic and transportation issues can be better overcome.

The charts compare Korea, Sweden and the UK in terms of the methods used in each country to dispose of harmful waste.

It is clear that in both the UK and Sweden, the majority of dangerous waste products are buried underground. By contrast, most hazardous materials in the Republic of Korea are recycled.

Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that 82% of the UK’s dangerous waste is put into landfill sites. This disposal technique is used for 55% of the harmful waste in Sweden and only 22% of similar waste in Korea. The latter country recycles 69% of hazardous materials, which is far more than the other two nations.

While 25% of Sweden\'s dangerous waste is recycled, the UK does not recycle at all. Instead, it dumps waste at sea or treats it chemically. These two methods are not employed in Korea or Sweden, which favour incineration for 9% and 20% of dangerous waste respectively.
